Piccolo Espresso, Miami

Piccolo Espresso, Miami Beach, has location, location, location! I’m always amazed that in a city sprawled along beachfront and webbed by waterways, there are comparatively few restaurants with water views. Tiny Piccolo, tucked underneath the Miami Surf Lifesaving Club directly across from the beach offers an unrivalled view for coffee or brunch.

I’m sure that ‘Piccolo’ refers not to the seating, which flows out towards the street, but to the tiny size of the kitchen, which keeps the café menu options tight. Most food on display in cabinets has been brought in, with fresh ingredients for breakfasts and lunches sourced from local suppliers. There’s mostly simple wholesome food on offer at reasonable prices: the usual eggs, muesli etc. for breakfast, Turkish and ryebread sandwiches or salads for lunch, or cakes and slices, such as the ‘Super slice’, filled with oh so good for you dates, nuts, raw cacao and seeds. There’s good Merlo coffee, as you’d expect in a Simon Gloftis café, Byron Bay organic teas, but best of all are the frappées, smoothies and fresh juices made to order. Their sparkling freshness is right at home in this seaside venue.

Piccolo1 Piccolo faces east to the morning sun, but on the afternoon we visit there’s a pleasant sea breeze cooling the otherwise hot summer day. Several tables of people walk up off the beach after 2pm, so it’s a surprise to see the cafe closing up by 2.30pm. There’s no chance at all of a late lunch!

Piccolo4 The view across the low dunes to the surf is sensational. Mixed with the spectacle of lifesavers and bikers, it’s a fitness beach culture that’s on display – a spectator’s paradise and a great place to grab a simple bite to eat!
